Operationsbefehl Nr. 10 20.6.40 "Defense Against All Sides"

With the arrival of German troops at the Swiss border near Les Verrières the situation changed dramatically. Switzerland was almost enclosed by German forces.

"Die allgemeine Lage zwingt uns, jederzeit gegen Angriffe bereit zu sein, die an allen Grenzen gleichzeitig erfolgen können. Die Armee hat nunmehr folgende Aufgaben:

1. Gegen N und NE: Hält sie zur Deckung der Zentralschweiz und zur Verhinderung eines Vorstosses in das Aaretal zwischen Brugg und Solothurn eine Stellung, welche sich von Sargans bis zum Gempenplateau erstreckt.
2. Gegen W:
   • Deckt sie die Gegend von Solothurn - Neuchatel, indem sie das Durchstossen des Berner- und Neuenburgerjura verhindert;
   • sperrt sie die Anmarschrichtung gegen Fribourg durch Halten der Mentue-Paudèze-Stellung:
   • deckt sie die N-Front der Festung St. Maurice, indem Sie einen Vorstoss in die Waadtländer Alpen verhindert.
3. Gegen S: Hält sie die Festungen St. Maurice, St. Gotthard, ebenso die Pässe der Berner und Glarner-Alpen, um das Berneroberland und das obere Reuss- und Linthtal zu decken.

Überall ist die Verteidigung unter Zusammenfassung der Mittel an die Haupteinbruchsstellen in der Tiefe aufzubauen. An allen Fronten ist schon von den Stellungen der Gz. Trp. an Widerstand zu leisten und es sind überdies die Hauptverteidungsstellungen durch ein ebenso vollständiges als tiefgestaffeltes Zerstörungsnetz zu decken."

"The general situation forces us to be ready at any time against attacks which can take place at all borders at the same time. The army now has the following tasks:

1. Towards the North and the Northeast: It holds a position which extends between the Plateau of Gempen and the fortress of Sargans, to cover central Switzerland and to prevent an attack into the valley of the Aare between Brugg and Sargans.
2. Towards the West:
   • The army covers the area of Solothurn - Neuchatel, by preventing an attack through the Bernese and the Neuchatel Jura mountains.
   • It blocks the approach against Fribourg at the Mentue-Paudèze position.
   • It covers the Northern front of the fortress St-Maurice, by blocking a push through the Vaud Alps.
3. Towards the South: the army holds the fortresses of St-Maurice, St. Gotthard as well as the passes of the Bernese and the Glarnese Alps to cover the Bernese Oberland and the upper Reuss- and Linth- Valleys.

Everywhere the defense has to be built up by concentrating the means on the main approaches in depth. On all fronts the frontier troops have already to resist and the main defense positions have to be covered by a deep network of destruction."

The main changes toward the Operationsbefehl No 4 were:

• The allocation of two divisions and one light brigade to cover the Western approaches of Switzerland on the Mentue-Paudèze position.
• The allocation of 7. Division to the cover of the Jura mountains.
