The 9th border brigade was assigned the defense of the Southern approaches to the St. Gotthard pass.
Its first line of resistance was located on the line of Locarno - Monte Ceneri with at least 7 infantry batallions with some anti-tank assets and some artillery. It also occupied a second line of resistance in the area of Bellinzona with another three infantry batallions.
The border brigade 9 was essentially organized like a mountain brigade. With its 13 mountain infantry batallions it was very strong in infantry. On the other side it had only a few small calibre guns allocated for indirect fire support.
