The 10th mountain brigade had as a task to cover the entry to the Valais valley between the Chillon position, St. Maurice and the little St. Bernhard pass. It was closely linked with the fortifications of St. Maurice.
The brigade's artillery was positioned in the area South of Martigny, where the cover of the fortified artillery was pretty weak.
