Swiss Festung Sargans - Operationsbefehl No 12 17.7.1940
[Task and Position] [Order of Battle]
The fortification of Sargans was the newest of the three corner stones of the alpine fortification system in Switzerland. Its construction began in the late 30s and in May 1940 the first works had been readied only for a few weeks or months.
The task of the forteress of Sargans was to block the entry into the Grisons (Graubünden) from the North and therefore to protect the Eastern approaches to the St. Gotthard fortifications.
