The 9th division had the task to defend the St. Gotthard pass and the adjacent Furka and Grimsel passes (command Gotthard West), the upper Rhine valley around Disentis (command Gotthard East) and the upper Leventina and the Bedretto valley (in the area of the command Gotthard South).
