The 4th division had the task to block the approach from the North and the Northwest over the Passwang, and Waldenburg through the Klus of Balsthal into the Aare valle between Solothurn (excl) and Olten (excl) behind the border brigade 4.

The division had four regiments, but only one batallion more, than in its standard OOB. One regiment (No 11) was allocated to 3. Division in the Central Area. The division had only two 75mm artillery batallions attached, but got additional artillery with older guns later (4 120mm, 32 84mm guns).
